The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received in audience members of the Association of Licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation of Nigeria (ALDAPCON) led by its Chairman, Mr Ivan Anya.
Speaking on behalf of the Association, Mr Anya appreciated Dr Olatunji for his warm welcome and commended him for his commitment to data protection and privacy in Nigeria. He mentioned the creation of an executive body to pilot the affairs of the Association and stressed the importance of members’ welfare in order to deliver effectively on their responsibilities to the Commission. Mr Anya noted ALDAPCON, in partnership with the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), just concluded a training for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in about twenty universities.
He requested that ALDAPCON should be carried along in the Commission’s engagements, using the opportunity to ask for participation in the 2025 edition of the Network of Africa Data Protection Authorities’ (NADPA) conference and Annual General Meeting.
Dr Olatunji commended ALDAPCON for its progress so far, which speaks to the success of the Public Private Partnership model adopted by the Commission. He also noted that this model has increased compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, hence creating trust and confidence in our digital economy. Dr Olatunji also informed them about the certification process, adding that Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs) would be involved in the training of prospective DPOs, while the Institute of Information Management would issue certificates. He urged the Association to do more in the area of advocacy, service delivery and audit filing. On its part, the NDPC will support the ALDAPCON to fulfill its mandate and involve the Association in the forthcoming NADPA Conference.
