The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), led by the National Commissioner/CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, was at the office of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to open a capacity-building program for NIPOST staff on data privacy and protection.
Receiving the Commission staff, the Post Master-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Engineer Tola Odeyemi, thanked the National Commissioner for personally leading his team to the training. She acknowledged that NIPOST has access to the personal information of Nigerians: hence, the need for the training. She expressed hope that after the training, NIPOST would be able to collect, process and safeguard data in a way that is compliant with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
In his remark, Dr Olatunji noted that NIPOST, being a data controller/processor of major importance, has demonstrated readiness to be data compliant on all fronts by putting every recommendation of the NDPC in their previous meetings into practise. He said the training was in furtherance of the relationship between the NDPC and NIPOST aimed at the data privacy and protection of the Nigerian populace. Dr Olatunji used the opportunity to inform everyone present that the NDPC recently did a pilot test of its certification program for Data Protection Officers, and encouraged interested staff of NIPOST to participate in the certification process which offers wide range of opportunities in the emerging data privacy and protection ecosystem.
