The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a delegation from the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), led by its President, Mr Adesola Akinsanya.
Mr Akinsanya commended Dr Olatunji for his dedication to strengthening data protection and privacy in Nigeria. He noted that NIRA oversees more than 150 registrars using the .ng domain and has already trained them on the fundamentals of data protection. He expressed a desire for further capacity-building opportunities for their staff and registrars, reaffirming NIRA’s commitment to supporting NDPC’s vision and advancing data protection in Nigeria.
In response, Dr Olatunji commended NIRA for its contributions to data protection and privacy. He highlighted that one of NDPC’s key objectives is safeguarding Nigerians’ digital identities, particularly as over 60% of the population consists of tech-savvy youths. He underscored the importance of cooperation and collaboration, aligning it with one of the pillars of the Commission’s strategic roadmap. He emphasised that data protection is a broad mandate that requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders.
In conclusion, Dr Olatunji invited NIRA to collaborate with the NDPC in developing policies, guidelines, and strategies to enhance data protection compliance. He also extended an invitation for NIRA to partner with NDPC in hosting the Network of African Data Protection Authorities’ (NADPA) Conference, scheduled for May 2025.
