The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, was the keynote speaker at a webinar on data protection and privacy organised by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS).
Dr. Olatunji delivered a presentation titled “The State of Data Protection and Privacy in Nigeria,” where he guided attendees through the history and evolution of data protection and privacy in Nigeria. His presentation highlighted the establishment of the NDPC, following the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) by President Bola Tinubu on June 12, 2023. He also took time to explain key terminologies in the data protection and privacy ecosystem before outlining the fundamental provisions of the NDP Act, the principles of data processing and the rights of data subjects.
He discussed the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model adopted by the Commission, noting its success and the growing interest from other Data Protection Authorities looking to replicate it. Additionally, he highlighted the obligations of data controllers and processors – such as registration with the NDPC, adherence to established data processing principles, and the appointment of a Data Protection Officer (DPO), among others. He also emphasised the consequences of non-compliance with the NDP Act.
Dr Olatunji further urged the NCS and its corporate members to ensure compliance with the NDP Act and collaborate with the Commission to strengthen data protection and privacy in Nigeria.
