The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led a delegation on a strategic visit to the Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General YD Ahmed.
During the visit, the National Commissioner stressed the importance of safeguarding digital footprints in our daily activities. He provided an overview of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem, highlighting the serious consequences of data breaches and the key role of data controllers and processors in ensuring data privacy.
A major focus of the visit was to achieve part of NDPC’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, built on five key pillars: awareness and capacity building, as well as collaboration. Dr Olatunji explained the goal of developing a pool of globally competitive Data Protection experts and identified NYSC as a critical partner in achieving this, given its annual production of 380,000 corps members. He also highlighted the NDPC’s progress in domesticating Data Protection certification and expressed the vision of positioning Nigeria as the largest exporter of certified data protection professionals.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed acknowledged NYSC’s awareness and compliance with Data Protection principles and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with the NDPC. He noted that the youth are the perfect audience for this initiative, being in their prime and adaptable. This partnership not only supports data protection awareness and compliance but also drives job creation and economic development, ensuring Nigerian youths are well-prepared for global opportunities in the digital space.
A joint working group was formed between the Commission and the NYSC to oversee the proposed collaboration.
