In furtherance of the recent visit by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the NDPC conducted a capacity-building workshop for NJI Fellows and ICT staff.
In his opening remarks, the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunj expressed his satisfaction with the rapid implementation of the collaborative initiative that resulted in the workshop. He stressed the importance of data protection and privacy for judicial fellows and ICT staff of the NJI. Dr. Olatunji highlighted that the training demonstrates Justice Abdullahi’s commitment to ensuring fellows are well-informed about the data protection ecosystem and can uphold its principles to protect the rights of Nigerian data subjects.
Dr Olatunji acknowledged the significant global impact of the data protection ecosystem in Nigeria, aligning it with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda to attract foreign investment. He described the workshop as an introduction to data protection and privacy fundamentals, urging participants to engage fully and apply the knowledge to their daily activities.
The Administrator of the NJI, Honourable Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, in his welcome remarks, appreciated the NDPC, led by Dr Olatunji, for enhancing the participants’ understanding of data protection and privacy through their expertise and experience. He welcomed participants to the program and noted the growing global focus on data protection and privacy due to data’s central role in modern life. He commended the collaborative efforts between the Commission and the NJI to cultivate a culture of privacy within the judiciary.
