The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received members of the Hotel Owners Forum, Abuja (HOFA), led by its President, Mr Emeka Ezekwesili at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Mr Ezekwesili commended the Commission’s efforts in creating awareness, considering the importance of the need to protect personal data. He stated that it was necessary for HOFA to visit the Commission following compliance orders issued to some of their members by NDPC. He requested the education of their members on the provisions of the NDP Act and reiterated their willingness to collaborate with the Commission to advance data protection in the hospitality ecosystem.
In response, Dr Olatunji commended the leadership of HOFA for taking the initiative to understand data protection and privacy. He provided an overview of the fundamentals of data protection and privacy, affirming that the NDPC is committed to ensuring the security of personal data in Nigeria. He stated that hotels often process sensitive personal data, which, if compromised, could pose significant risks to data subjects. He enlightened them on what they should do to ensure compliance with the NDP Act, 2023.
On behalf of the NDPC, Dr Olatunji offered free training about data protection to HOFA members, and a working group between the Commission and HOFA was formed.
