Following the successful hosting of the 2025 edition of the NADPA-RAPDP Conference and Annual General Meeting, the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, received representatives from several Data Protection Authorities (DPAs), including those of Gambia and Somalia. These delegations remained in Nigeria to study the strategy adopted by the NDPC, which has positioned it as a key player in the global data protection and privacy ecosystem.
During this period, Dr Olatunji signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Commission with the DPA Somalia. The MoU outlines areas of collaboration, including mutual legal assistance and information sharing to support the enforcement of data protection laws, among other objectives.
The Director-General of DPA Somalia, Mohamed Nur Ali, signed on behalf of the Authority. The signing ceremony took place at the NDPC headquarters in Abuja. The MoU is expected to strengthen the relationship between the two Data Protection Authorities and advance data protection and privacy in both countries.
The Chairperson of The Gambia’s Information Commission, Mrs. Neneh MacDouall-Gaye, expressed her gratitude for the warm reception extended to her delegation by the NDPC. She commended the Commission’s team, under the leadership of Dr Olatunji, for the successful hosting of the conference. Mrs. MacDouall-Gaye also expressed optimism that The Gambia would soon follow Somalia’s example by establishing a formal agreement with the NDPC, once an independent Data Protection Commission is set up in the country.
