The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received delegations from Zambia and Zimbabwe on a working visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The purpose of the visit was for the delegations to understudy the day-to-day operations of the NDPC, with a view to replicating best practices in their respective countries.
The Zambian delegation was led by Likando Luywa, the Data Protection Commissioner for Zambia, while the Zimbabwean team was headed by Tsitsi Mariwo, the Director of Data Protection in Zimbabwe. Both delegations expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to observe the Commission’s operations firsthand. They commended the NDPC for its achievements, which have earned it international recognition, and for successfully hosting the recently concluded NADPA-RAPDP Conference and Annual General Meeting.
Dr Olatunji welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Commission. He provided an overview of the evolution of data protection in Nigeria, noting that the Commission created a strategic road map, which has being its guide, following the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. He emphasised that one key factor responsible for the huge success at the NDPC is the public-private-partnership model adopted by the Commission.
Other subjects of discussion include; human capital development, awareness, policies and collaboration strategies, among others. The delegates thanked Dr Olatunji for his insights and hospitality, and pledged to apply the knowledge gained during their visit to strengthen data protection efforts in their home countries.
