The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received in audience, a team from the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), led by its Acting Director of Cancer Surveillance and Monitoring, Dr Joy Iya-Benson.
During her speech, Dr Iya-Benson gave a brief insight into NICRAT’s mandate—which includes collection, processing and storage of personal data of Nigerians with cancer-related challenges. She stated that they were at the Commission to seek clarity on how best to manage this sensitive data, and requested the Commission’s guidance on compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023. Dr Iya-Benson also sought for partnership with the Commission, and support in training their staff on data protection and privacy best practices.
In his response, Dr Olatunji commended the NICRAT team for their proactive approach. He highlighted the consequences of not safeguarding the sensitive data they process—which may include wrong diagnosis, stigmatisation, and even death in extreme cases. He enlightened the NICRAT team on what they need to do to ensure compliance with the NDP Act, and added that this would further enhance their credibility rating.
On behalf of the NDPC, Dr Olatunji agreed to provide training for NICRAT staff on data protection and privacy. He also stated that the Commission is open to partnering with NICRAT in any capacity necessary on matters related to data protection and privacy.
