The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led staff of the Commission on a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr Adebowale Adedokun.
Dr Olatunji commended Dr Adedokun for the warm reception extended to him and the NDPC team. He stated that data protection and privacy have become significant globally, necessitating nations all over the world to have their respective data protection laws and independent authorities. He highlighted the risks associated with failing to safeguard personal data, and noted that the visit to the BPP was aimed at seeking partnership with the Bureau to promote data protection and privacy across all sectors, in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR)’s priority areas.
In his remarks, Dr Adedokun commended Dr Olatunji for the visit, while stressing that data currently governs the world. He acknowledged the importance of data protection and privacy, particularly in procurement processes. He also stated that the NDPC is critical in managing procurement functions in Nigeria, and expressed his readiness to work with the Commission. Dr Adedokun affirmed that data protection and privacy would be integrated into the Bureau’s “Nigerians-first” policy as a means to drive compliance effectively.
Dr Olatunji offered free training for BPP staff—an offer that was gladly accepted by Dr Adedokun on behalf of the Bureau. A working group was established to develop the details of the collaboration between the NDPC and BPP, including drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise and strengthen their partnership.
