NDPC Partners with the Judiciary to Tackle Online Harm and Cybersecurity Limits

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, was represented by the Head of Innovation Unit at the NDPC, Mrs Adaobi Nwankwo, at the Annual Workshop for Judges on Emerging Legal Issues in the Communication Sector in Lagos.

Mrs Nwankwo was joined at the event themed, “Adjudicating the Digital Era: The Judiciary’s Imperative in Connectivity Infrastructure Protection and Online Safety,” by another staff of the Commission, Ms Omoikhefe Ahimie.

During the panel session on, “Online Harm, Cybersecurity and the Limits of Internet Governance in Nigeria,” Mrs Nwankwo highlighted the NDPC’s commitment to ensuring safeguards are implemented in the processing of personal data and stressed the importance of accountability, transparency, lawful basis for processing, and the adoption of appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data.

Mrs Nwankwo also emphasised the use of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) such as anonymisation, encryption and pseudonymisation, as well as the need for Data Privacy Impact Assessments (DPIAs) where processing activities may pose high risks to data subjects.
