The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) held the fifth edition of the Digital Privacy Awareness Campaign (DPAC) at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, as part of its nationwide sensitisation initiative aimed at promoting data protection and privacy awareness among students in tertiary institutions.

The event was declared open by the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, who was represented by the Head of Research and Development at the NDPC, Dr Tolulope Pius-Fadipe. Dr Pius-Fadipe emphasised the importance of privacy awareness and responsible digital engagement, encouraging students to actively participate in shaping a secure and privacy-conscious digital ecosystem.

The event featured remarks from the University’s Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr A.A. Abuloye, and the Vice Dean of the Department of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, Professor Olukemi Awoyelu. Both speakers highlighted that privacy is a collective responsibility that extends beyond technology professionals and urged students to become active stakeholders in data protection and digital privacy advocacy.

In addition to three Privacy Talk sessions, the event also featured a panel discussion with experts in the data protection and privacy ecosystem, who explored emerging issues surrounding privacy in the digital age. Special sessions delivered by representatives of ISACA, Ibadan Chapter, and the Google Developers Group examined the impact of artificial intelligence, social media, and emerging technologies on privacy and data protection.

Beyond the knowledge-sharing sessions, participants received free Virtual Privacy Academy vouchers to support their continued learning in data protection and privacy. The event included interactive game sessions designed to test students’ knowledge of digital privacy, with winners receiving exciting giveaways. The event also witnessed the official inauguration of the OAU Data Privacy Club, aimed at sustaining privacy awareness and advocacy within the university community.
