The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a team from the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, led by its Dean, Professor Olayinka David-West, on a courtesy visit.

In her remarks, Professor David-West commended Dr Olatunji for the Commission’s remarkable achievements since its establishment. She stated that they were at the Commission to explore possible areas of collaboration, especially in relation to the national Artificial Intelligence Scaling Hub initiative. She noted the need for digital ecosystem development, capacity building, and solid policy and regulatory frameworks. She also emphasised the need for both institutions to work together to ensure Nigeria maximises AI while safeguarding the rights of data subjects in the country.

In his response, Dr Olatunji noted that there is no escaping AI, as it has come to stay, and stressed the importance of embedding Privacy by Design in the development of AI-driven solutions to ensure the protection of data subjects. He reiterated that the Commission’s regulatory approach is developmental, aimed at stimulating innovation, supporting economic growth, and contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s GDP rather than stifling businesses.

Both institutions agreed to establish a joint implementation team to drive the partnership, facilitate continuous engagement, and develop high-quality policy and capacity-building initiatives that will strengthen data protection and privacy in Nigeria.
