The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a delegation from the Nigeria Army Cyber Warfare School, led by its Commandant, Brigadier-General J.H. Bawa, on a strategic working visit to the Commission.

Brigadier-General Bawa stated that the delegation was at the Commission to explore possible areas of collaboration, particularly in the area of data protection and privacy. Highlighting the shift of warfare from land, sea and air to cyberspace, Brigadier-General Bawa stated that they seek the support of the Commission in training their personnel on data protection and privacy best practices as they build capacity to meet current global security realities.

In his remarks, Dr Olatunji commended Brigadier-General Bawa for his proactive approach to data protection. He stated that partnership is important to the Commission and that the NDPC is willing to support the School. He took the team through the evolution of data protection and privacy in Nigeria, the fundamentals of data protection, as well as the steps towards compliance, taking into consideration their unique status as a security agency.

To support their capacity-building efforts, Dr Olatunji offered free induction training and 50 complimentary Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers to the School. Brigadier-General Bawa thanked Dr Olatunji for the support, and both organisations committed to working together in support of their respective mandates.

Other collaboration areas were also discussed, including inviting the NDPC to speak at their annual workshop and incorporating data protection into their school curriculum.
