The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, was represented by Mr Abubakar Mahmud and Mr Ibrahim Danazumi, officers from the IT & Cybersecurity Department of the Commission, at the 5th National Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

The event, with the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Economic Sustainability and National Resilience”, and organised by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) in Katsina, was declared open by the Kastina State Governor, His Excellency Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, who was represented by the State’s Deputy Governor, Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe.

During the technical presentation titled “Ethics, Regulation, and Responsible AI in Nigeria”, Mr Mahmud discussed the future of responsible AI in Nigeria. Key highlights included the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 as the foundation for AI governance and the critical importance of data subject rights in the age of AI. He also emphasised that while a Data Privacy Impact Assessment (DPIA) is a mandatory requirement, an AI System Impact Assessment (AISIA) takes ethical evaluation beyond simple compliance.

As part of the event, Mr Mahmud also participated in a panel session to discuss responsible AI deployment in Nigeria.
