The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, participated in the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Data Protection Authority Day 2026 engagements in Washington, D.C.
During the high-level engagements, Dr Olatunji shared Nigeria’s progressive approach to data protection and digital innovation with key U.S. Government stakeholders, such as U.S. State Privacy Enforcers and senior officials driving the U.S. Administration on Privacy. He noted that the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act, 2023) established a balanced regulatory framework that protects personal data without stifling innovation, adding that the NDP Act enables a thriving digital ecosystem by promoting responsible innovation, regulatory clarity, and compliance.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s model avoids overregulation while fostering a compliance-driven ecosystem that supports start-ups, digital enterprises, and emerging technologies. He stated that Nigeria has made significant strides in ensuring effective coordination between the federal and state levels, enabling uniform implementation of the NDP Act across the country. This alignment, he explained, has strengthened regulatory clarity, improved compliance outcomes, and reinforced trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.
He commended the strong and growing partnership between the United States Government and the NDPC, noting that such collaboration will continue to enhance knowledge exchange, regulatory cooperation, and capacity development within the global data privacy ecosystem.
These engagements reinforce Nigeria’s position as a leading voice in advancing digital trust, responsible innovation, and international cooperation in data governance.
