As part of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)’s activities during the 2026 edition of National Privacy Week, the Commission held the second edition of the IMPACT initiative, with the topic: “The Accountability Chain: Deciphering Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance Obligations and the Role of Data Protection Officers in the Use of Emerging Technologies.”
The speakers were the Head of the Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department at the NDPC, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye Esq.; the Chief Information Security Officer/Data Protection Officer at Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, Mr Bharat Soni; the Senior Vice President, Corporate Services at T2 Mobile, Mr Ifeloju Alakija; the Director, Privacy and Data Policy, Africa, Middle East and Turkiye at Meta, Dr Ololade Shyllon; and the Managing Partner at Aluko & Oyebode, Ms Adeolu Idowu.
The speakers explored the following: the meaning of emerging technologies and the privacy risks they present; how organisations can use emerging technologies responsibly to foster public trust; practical steps organisations can take to build robust data protection practices; and the evolving role of a Data Protection Officer from one of compliance to a strategic governance risk role.
This edition, moderated by the Head of the Regulations Unit at the Commission, Ibukunoluwa Owa, had over 650 participants in attendance and has received excellent feedback on the insights shared by the speakers.
