As part of activities marking the National Privacy Week, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) organised a Media Chat and Capacity Building Workshop for its media partners in Lagos. The training was designed to enhance journalists’ understanding of the data protection and privacy ecosystem, to enable accurate and responsible reporting on related issues.
Speaking virtually at the event, the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, commended the media partners for their continued support of the Commission, particularly in advancing public awareness of data protection and privacy.
While addressing the journalists during the media chat, he emphasised the importance of data protection and privacy and highlighted some of the Commission’s achievements. These include the creation of about 23,000 new jobs and the growth of a data protection ecosystem now valued at approximately ₦16.2 billion. He also noted that the NDPC was recognised as the Most Outstanding Data Protection Authority at the Picasso Awards last year, and urged the media to sustain their support for the Commission’s mandate.
The training session introduced media partners to key concepts in data protection and privacy, including the principles of personal data processing, legal bases for processing, and cross-border data transfers, among other critical topics.
