The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) hosted the fourth edition of its IMPACT (Important Privacy Action Trends) initiative, themed: “The Expectation of Privacy in Public Spaces: Law or Myth?”
The discussions examined the expectation of privacy in public spaces, particularly focusing on the Commission’s Press Release of 13th March 2026, which warned content creators against recording unsuspecting individuals in public without consent and sharing the same online. During the discussions, the speakers explored the specific harms the Commission was targeting in releasing this statement, particularly regarding the violation of citizens’ right to informational self-determination and the exploitation of individuals who have no expectation of being recorded and broadcast publicly.
The discussions also examined the application of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, to independent content creators and whether individuals who process personal data for commercial or global broadcast should be held to the same legal standards as corporate organisations. In addition, it addressed how platform owners implement necessary safeguards and mechanisms to protect individuals from unlawful and unfair processing of their personal data.
Speakers at the session included the Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations at the NDPC, Barr. Babatunde Bamigboye; Privacy Governance Expert, Mr. Godson Oghenechuko, Esq.; and Public Policy Expert, Ms. Tokunbo Ibrahim, Esq. The session was moderated by Ms. Atinuke Nukay of the Commission’s Media Unit. It also featured an update on privacy trends by an officer from the Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations Department, Barr. Lydia Ogba, and recorded a total of 580 participants in attendance.
The webinar featured robust engagement and interactive discussions and received excellent feedback from participants.
