The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led a delegation on a working visit to the Head of the Regional Economic Department Nigeria – Ghana, Florent Mangin at the French Embassy in Abuja.
The meeting explored avenues for technical cooperation and institutional strengthening between the Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) of Nigeria and France, with a shared focus on corporate exchange, regulatory experience sharing, and awareness creation.
Dr Olatunji highlighted the remarkable progress made by the NDPC since its establishment through the Nigeria Data Protection Act, signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) in 2023. He noted that Nigeria’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has been instrumental in driving these achievements. He emphasised awareness and capacity building among others as key priorities for the NDPC.
The French team acknowledged NDPC’s remarkable progress and identified opportunities to deepen capacity in areas such as audit and oversight capacities, integration of data protection in service design (privacy by design), and awareness creation among Nigerian citizens.
Further discussions were held on the regulation of artificial intelligence in Nigeria, cross-border transfer of data, sector-specific regulations, and other possible areas of collaboration.
