The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr Charles Ebuebu, at the NBC Headquarters in Abuja.
Dr Olatunji commended Mr Ebuebu for his active participation in National Privacy Week (NPW) 2026, describing it as a clear demonstration of strategic collaboration and shared commitment to advancing data protection in Nigeria. He appreciated NBC’s alignment with NDPC’s regulatory objectives and emphasized the importance of inter-agency synergy in strengthening governance, supporting the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and deepening data protection awareness across the public sector through the Commission’s evolving framework and PPP model.
Dr Olatunji further proposed a structured Data Protection Induction Programme for NBC staff, alongside the provision of Virtual Privacy Academy vouchers and enrollment in the Data Protection Certification Programme. He noted that these initiatives are designed to strengthen institutional understanding of data protection obligations under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) and enhance overall compliance capacity within the Commission.
In his response, Mr Ebuebu appreciated the NDPC delegation for the visit and reaffirmed NBC’s commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration. He stressed the importance of establishing regulatory frameworks between NBC and NDPC to effectively implement the provisions of the NDP Act, close potential data breach gaps, and proactively address emerging challenges rather than responding after damage has occurred.
Both Commissions agreed to formalize their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). They also resolved to establish a joint task force to immediately commence the implementation of the outcomes of their discussions.
