The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a delegation from the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), led by its Chairman, Aremo Richard Ojo, on a working visit to the Commission’s headquarters.
Aremo Ojo appreciated Dr Olatunji for the warm reception and stated that their visit was aimed at gaining further insight into compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act, 2023), following the enlightenment they received during a training session organised for them by the NDPC.
He reiterated that the Council is a legally registered body that has been operational for sixty-two (62) years. Having recognised the importance of data protection and privacy, he affirmed their willingness to comply with the NDP Act and collaborate with the Commission to strengthen data privacy within the insurance brokerage sector. He concluded by commending the Commission for adopting an “awareness-first” approach prior to enforcement.
In response, Dr Olatunji commended the Council for its willingness to comply and emphasised that the NDPC considers all data controllers and processors as partners. He noted that NCRIB represents a significant sector where large volumes of data are processed and highlighted the potential risks of failing to implement adequate safeguards for personal data.
Dr Olatunji further explained that collaboration and partnership are key pillars of the Commission’s Strategic Partnership and Action Plan. He noted that the Commission has signed Memoranda of Understanding with several regulators, including the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM)—the regulatory body for the insurance industry in Nigeria—to strengthen data protection and privacy both locally and globally. He assured that the Commission is willing to work with NCRIB and provide the necessary support to facilitate their compliance with the NDP Act.
