The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a delegation from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, on a courtesy visit to the Commission in Abuja.
Comrade Ike commended the NDPC, under the leadership of Dr Olatunji, for its achievements so far. She reiterated the importance of data protection and privacy, stating that they were at the Commission to seek partnership and capacity building. She noted that well-equipped journalists would better understand how to report news without breaching privacy. She requested that the NUJ be included in the Commission’s programmes, such as workshops, seminars and others.
In his remarks, Dr Olatunji commended the FCT Council for the visit. He stated that the NDPC’s mandate thrives primarily on awareness and that the Commission has been actively promoting this, even though there is room for improvement. He mentioned the strategic engagement with journalists in Lagos and Abuja during the recently concluded National Privacy Week. He noted that beyond raising awareness for compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, the NUJ can help to showcase the career opportunities within the ecosystem.
On behalf of the NDPC, Dr Olatunji promised to organise a one-day induction training for the FCT Council and offered them free Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers, as well as a few slots in the certification programme, as the Commission hopes to work with them strategically, especially at the zonal level.
