NDPC and World Food Programme to Collaborate on Data Protection for Vulnerable Nigerians

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Mr Christophe Boutonnier, at the WFP office in Abuja.

Dr Olatunji stated that the Commission was at the WFP office to enlighten the organisation, as a data controller and processor of major importance, on the need to protect the personal data of its beneficiaries and personnel. While acknowledging that the WFP is a United Nations agency, he emphasised that data protection and privacy are global responsibilities for every entity that processes personal data. He added that compliance with data protection laws enhances credibility, and fosters trust and confidence among beneficiaries and stakeholders.

In his remarks, Mr Boutonnier commended Dr Olatunji for the visit. He explained that the WFP supports about 750,000 vulnerable Nigerians with food and cash on a daily basis, and reaffirmed the organisation’s recognition of the importance of data protection and privacy. He stressed that the WFP is committed to safeguarding all personal data in its database, and has mechanisms in place to ensure this.

Mr Boutonnier further invited the NDPC to speak at the WFP’s staff capacity-building workshops, an invitation graciously accepted by Dr Olatunji on behalf of the Commission. Other potential areas of collaboration were also explored.
