NDPC Boss to Corporate Directors: Transition from Passive Oversight to Active Data Stewardship

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, delivered the keynote address at the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoD) Members’ Evening 2026, themed “Beyond Oversight: Directors as Stewards of Technology, Data, and Trust in the Imagination Era,” held in Lagos.

In his presentation, Dr Olatunji highlighted the realities of the “Imagination Era,” drawing attention to its hidden risks, the emergence of digital trust as a new competitive currency, and the growing importance of data protection and privacy. He emphasised the need for directors to prioritise compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, outlining the benefits of compliance and the consequences of non-compliance. He further encouraged directors to redefine their roles, from oversight to stewardship as they lead their respective organisations.

Dr Olatunji also participated in a fireside chat moderated by the Managing Director/CEO of Shared Agent Network Expansion Facilities (SANEF), Mrs Uche Uzoebo. During the session, he spoke extensively on the duty of care and the importance of prioritising awareness and capacity building within organisations. He also addressed questions from CIoD members and concluded by urging them to embed compliance as a culture across their respective organisations.

In recognition of his insightful contributions, Dr Olatunji was presented with an honorary award by the CIoD. The event also featured the unveiling of the 37th edition of the Directors’ Magazine, where he joined the President and Chairman of the Governing Board of CIoD, Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, alongside other distinguished members of the Institute.
