NDPC, CSOs to Partner on Advancing Data Privacy and Digital Rights Across Nigeria

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) led by the Programme Manager of Global Rights, Esosa Oviawe, on a courtesy visit to the Commission. The visit aimed to explore areas of collaboration in advancing data privacy, digital rights, and public awareness across Nigeria.

Mr Oviawe commended the Commission for its efforts in building Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem following the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act). He emphasised the importance of continuous engagement between the NDPC and CSOs to enhance credibility, foster rights-based discussions, and create a more enabling environment for data protection initiatives. He further noted that CSOs have been closely following the Commission’s work and are eager to partner in training citizens and expanding public awareness of data protection and privacy rights.

In his response, Dr Olatunji appreciated the delegation for the visit and for identifying areas of potential collaboration. He highlighted the significance of awareness creation and human capital development, two key pillars under the Commission’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan. He acknowledged the critical role of CSOs, noting that their close connection with communities positions them as vital partners in driving data protection and privacy awareness. Dr Olatunji also noted that the Commission has translated the NDP Act into Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to promote inclusivity and ensure understanding at the grassroots level.

Both parties discussed additional areas of collaboration and reaffirmed their commitment to sustained partnership in promoting privacy, trust, and accountability within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
