NDPC, Governors’ Forum Move to Secure Citizens’ Data Amid Growing Public Sector Digitisation

As part of its commitment to promoting awareness and strengthening compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), organised a sensitisation webinar for State Governments across the country, in line with the Commission’s strategic pillar of Human Capital Development.

The webinar, aimed at deepening understanding of data privacy and protection within the public sector, was organised in response to the increasing digitisation of public governance and the corresponding need to safeguard citizens’ personal data while fostering trust in government institutions. The virtual session attracted 287 participants, including Attorneys-General from various states, Directors, senior Information and Communication Technology (ICT) officials, and representatives of key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

During the webinar, participants were introduced to the provisions of the NDP Act, the principles of data privacy and protection, and the processes for implementing effective data protection practices within public institutions. Discussions also highlighted the importance of data governance in enhancing transparency, accountability and citizens’ confidence in the delivery of public services.

The sensitisation webinar serves as a precursor to the Implementation Capacity Building Workshop for State Governments, scheduled to hold in August 2026. The forthcoming workshop is designed to provide participants with practical knowledge, implementation frameworks, and hands-on guidance to support the effective adoption of data protection requirements within state MDAs.
