NDPC Hosts Ugandan Delegation on a Study Tour.
The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received a delegation from the Ugandan Personal Data Protection Office on a study visit to the Commission. The delegation was led by Mr Stephen Mugabe, Director of Data Protection Affairs.
On the purpose of their visit, Mr Mugabe stated that the team was in Nigeria to observe and learn from the NDPC’s operational framework to adopt applicable best practices in Uganda, particularly in the light of the significant milestones Nigeria has been able to achieve in the data privacy ecosystem within a relatively short period. He commended the NDPC for the warm reception accorded his team and provided an overview of Uganda’s progress in the area of data protection. Mr. Mugabe reaffirmed his country’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of data subjects, aligning with NDPC’s own dedication to protecting the privacy rights of Nigerians.
In his remarks, Dr Olatunji shared insights into the evolution and success of the NDPC, attributing much of its growth to the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model employed by the Commission. He advised the Ugandan delegation to formulate strategies suited to their national context and encouraged the adoption of local technologies in implementing data protection initiatives. Dr Olatunji also elaborated on the domestication process of certifying Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in Nigeria.
During the interactive session, NDPC staff addressed several questions from the Ugandan team, highlighting key focus areas such as public awareness, human capital development, and strategic partnerships. Dr Olatunji further called for stronger collaboration among African Data Protection Authorities to build a robust data protection and privacy ecosystem that commands global respect.
