The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, was represented by the Commission’s Head of Strategy, Partnership and Communication, Mrs Abiola Jide-Abe, at the 3rd Edition of the Data Controllers and Data Processors Conference and Awards, themed, “Governing Data in the Age of AI, Automation and Cross-Border Digital Economies,” in Lagos.
Delivering the Keynote Address, Mrs Jide-Abe conveyed the warm wishes of Dr Olatunji to the organisers and participants, and commended the organisers for convening the conference and highlighted the need for accountability and responsibility in the deployment of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), while noting evolving concerns around liability and the explainability of automated decision-making. She reaffirmed the NDPC’s commitment to providing regulatory guidance, strengthening enforcement and building stakeholder capacity to support the continued development of Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem.
A Legal Officer at the Commission, Ms Lydia Ogba, represented the Commission as a panellist on “Cross-Border Data Transfer Risks and the New Reality of Global Cloud Infrastructure,” contributing to discussions on emerging data protection and regulatory risks associated with cross-border data transfers and global cloud infrastructure.
The Commission was also honoured with the Data Protection Ecosystem Development Leadership Award in recognition of its contribution to the advancement of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem at the Dinner and Award Night, which marked the culmination of the event.
