The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, held an engaging fireside chat with participants during the launch of the Commission’s Important Privacy Action Trend (ImPAcT) webinar series, aimed at fostering direct interaction and discussion on key data protection and privacy issues in Nigeria.
The maiden edition of the ImPAcT webinar, themed “Data Rights: Who Owes You a Duty of Care?”, provided a platform for the NDPC to engage directly with data subjects and stakeholders. With over 200 participants joining the session, Dr Olatunji answered Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and listed some achievements of the Commission.
Dr Olatunji emphasised the importance of data protection and privacy while also taking the opportunity to clearly distinguish between the two concepts. He noted that most data controllers and processors in Nigeria are familiar with cybersecurity, which speaks to data protection, but are only just getting acquainted with privacy, which speaks to the rights of data subjects guaranteed by the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023.
Participants had the chance to ask questions directly to the National Commissioner, and they received detailed and insightful answers. All inquiries were addressed, making the session both interactive and informative. The open dialogue helped deepen participants’ understanding of data protection and privacy, as well as the rights of data subjects and the obligations of data controllers and processors.
