Nigeria Hosts Somalia’s Data Protection Authority on Virtual Study Tour
Following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Somalia’s Data Protection Authority, the NDPC hosted a delegation from Somalia on a virtual study tour. The engagement was part of a collaborative initiative aimed at fostering mutual learning and strengthening bilateral cooperation in data protection.
The Somali delegation participated in sessions designed to explore Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem and its unique regulatory models. Representing the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, was the Commission’s Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye. He warmly welcomed the participants and delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the National Commissioner.
Barrister Bamigboye led a comprehensive training on Nigeria’s evolving mandate and regulatory framework for data protection. He stressed the importance of international collaboration and knowledge exchange, outlining the mutual benefits such partnerships bring to the development of sustainable data protection practices. His presentation further addressed key topics such as cross-border data transfers and the formulation of legal and regulatory instruments.
In a subsequent session, NDPC’s Head of People Management and Administration, Mrs Watira Fitto, offered insights into the Commission’s internal operations. She detailed the organisational structure, shared highlights from the NDPC’s Strategic Roadmap, and demonstrated core operational tools and policies. Discussions also covered the professional code of ethics, data breach notification templates, and incident response mechanisms.
