The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, represented Nigeria at the Closed Session of the 47th Global Privacy Assembly (GPA). The exclusive session for accredited Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) focused on the accreditation of new members and observers, announcement of GPA Executive Committee members, updates from GPA Working Groups, Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR), and reports from the Council of Europe & Consultative Committee of Convention 108+.
The session included engaging panel discussions on vital topics such as capacity building for Data Protection Authorities, the challenges of targeted marketing, effective investigation strategies, and mechanisms for empowering data subjects through data portability.
Dr Olatunji also led the NDPC delegation to a high-level strategic meeting with the Microsoft team. The discussion acknowledged the impactful work done by both parties, and explored possible areas for more collaborations, particularly in advancing data protection initiatives, innovation, and regulatory support. The meeting aligns with Pillar 4 of the Commission’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, which focuses on strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement to enhance privacy governance.
As data flows across borders, collaboration among nations is more vital than ever. The GPA continues to strengthen global ties to uphold privacy rights and build a safer, more accountable digital world.
