The Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department at the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Babatunde Bamigboye, Esq., was elected as the Rapporteur of the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group on Electronic Commerce.
His election followed his nomination by the United States’ delegation and secondment by Singapore’s delegation at the 70th Session of the Working Group at the UN Headquarters in New York, where extensive deliberations were held on the Draft Model Legislative Provisions (DMLP) on Contracts for the Provision of Data.
UNCITRAL aims, among others, to foster stability in data provision value chains around the world. These efforts protect data providers and data recipients as they carry out legitimate business activities. A striking feature of the DMLP is the respect for national laws, such as those relating to trade and the protection of individuals.
Distinguished delegates at the 70th Session were drawn from Member States of the United Nations, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Ghana, Germany, Italy, the Russian Federation, Spain, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Observers included the African Union, the European Union, the American Law Institute and the Beijing Arbitration Commission.
