Nigeria Targets Global Digital Market Leadership Through Seamless, Secure Cross-Border Data Flows

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, delivered the welcome remarks on Day Two of the Workshop on the United States of America–Nigeria Data Protection Privacy Project (NDPC), organised by the United States Department of State and the Future of Privacy Forum for the digital ecosystem in Nigeria.

In his speech, Dr Olatunji noted that the two-day workshop marked a significant milestone in the collaboration between Nigeria, through the NDPC, and the United States, adding that the achievements of the Commission have been made possible through collaboration. He stated that the day’s session, attended by key stakeholders in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, demonstrates the growth of the ecosystem and underscores the need for collective efforts to further strengthen it.

Highlighting Nigeria’s associate membership of the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) system, Dr Olatunji noted that the seamless transfer of data—when all conditions ensuring data protection and privacy are meticulously satisfied—would enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian businesses and improve Nigeria’s standing in the global digital market. He also expressed appreciation to the United States Government and development partners for organising the workshop.

Other dignitaries at the workshop included the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Senator Salisu Afolabi Salisu; his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Honourable Adedeji Stanley Olajide; the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Mr Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi; the Counsellor for Economic Affairs at the United States Embassy in Nigeria, Ms Christine Harbaugh; as well as other stakeholders in the digital ecosystem.
