Securing Diaspora Data: NDPC, NiDCOM Partner to Enforce Data Privacy for Nigerians Abroad

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led a delegation from the Commission on a courtesy visit to the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

During the visit, Dr Olatunji commended Hon. Dabiri-Erewa for her efforts and contributions, particularly in advancing the interests and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora. He provided an overview of the evolution of data protection and privacy in Nigeria and globally. Dr Olatunji noted that, recognising the importance of technology and the need to enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian businesses, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023 into law.

He emphasised the importance of prioritising data protection and privacy, highlighting the potential consequences of inadequate protection. Dr Olatunji urged NiDCOM to continue its efforts towards full compliance with the NDP Act, noting that compliance would strengthen confidence in the Commission and enhance its standing in engagements with stakeholders both within and outside Nigeria. He reaffirmed the NDPC’s readiness to collaborate with NiDCOM and provide the necessary support, beginning with free data protection training for its staff and Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers.

In her response, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa congratulated Dr Olatunji on the inauguration of the new office. She commended the NDPC, under the leadership of Dr Olatunji, for its efforts in creating value and building trust in government. She stated that NiDCOM had received the circular issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) on compliance and was already taking steps towards compliance with the NDP Act. She expressed appreciation for the training and VPA support offered by the NDPC and reaffirmed the Commission’s willingness to strengthen collaboration with the NDPC.

The meeting also explored other areas of collaboration, including the establishment of a joint working team to facilitate sustained engagement and cooperation between both Commissions.
