Advancing Digital Diplomacy: Dr. Olatunji Meets Nigeria’s UN Rep, Pushes for Harmonised Data Laws

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, paid a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, as part of the NDPC’s participation in the ongoing United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

During the visit, Dr Olatunji congratulated Ambassador Ibrahim on his appointment to the United Nations and his election as Chair of the United Nations Committee on Budget and Administration. He described the appointments as a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence and leadership within the multilateral system. He highlighted the significant milestones recorded by the NDPC, noting that strategic institutional reforms have positioned Nigeria as a leading voice in the global data protection ecosystem.

Dr Olatunji added that Nigeria’s data protection framework has continued to attract international recognition and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting trusted data governance as a catalyst for digital transformation, economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

In his remarks, Ambassador Ibrahim commended the leadership and staff of the NDPC for the remarkable achievements recorded within a relatively short period following the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act). He shared strategic insights on strengthening data-driven governance and advocated the establishment of a comprehensive national data bank to serve as a repository of credible and structured information capable of supporting evidence-based governance, academic research, and national planning. He expressed the Permanent Mission’s commitment to initiatives that deepen data privacy, data protection, and responsible digital governance.

The ongoing UNCITRAL, which has brought together delegates from United Nations Member States, including Nigeria, Australia, China, Ghana, France, the United States, and several other jurisdictions, aims to develop harmonised legal frameworks designed to facilitate secure and trusted cross-border digital commerce.
