In furtherance of its mandate to promote data privacy awareness and foster a culture of data protection among Nigerians, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) conducted a sensitisation programme for corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Abuja.
The NDPC team was led by Barrister Princewill Odinaka of the Commission’s Research and Development Department, who delivered an interactive session on the importance of safeguarding personal data and adopting responsible digital practices. Corps members were sensitised on the risks associated with the misuse of personal information and the measures required to ensure online safety.
During the engagement, Barrister Odinaka also highlighted emerging opportunities within Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem. He drew attention to the Federal Government’s domesticated Data Protection Officer (DPO) Certification Programme, an initiative designed to develop indigenous capacity and equip professionals with the requisite knowledge and skills to support compliance with data protection obligations across sectors.
The visit further strengthened the collaborative relationship between the NDPC and the NYSC, while underscoring their shared commitment to empowering young Nigerians with critical digital literacy and data protection competencies. It also reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to continue engaging key stakeholders in advancing a privacy-conscious society and supporting the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
