The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led members of staff of the Commission on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honourable (Alhaja) Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.
In his remarks, Dr Olatunji commended Honourable Omidiran for her leadership and dedication to promoting equity and national cohesion since her appointment. He highlighted the strategic importance of the FCC in Nigeria’s governance architecture, noting that the FCC is a key data controller and processor, given the sensitivity and volume of data it manages. He added that compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023 would not only safeguard citizens’ rights but also enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust in the FCC’s activities.
In her response, Honourable Omidiran commended the NDPC, under the leadership of Dr Olatunji, for its sustained efforts in promoting data protection and privacy awareness across Nigeria. She highlighted the mandate of the FCC, acknowledged the importance of data protection and privacy in carrying out its mandate, and expressed FCC’s interest in working with the NDPC.
Dr Olatunji stated that collaboration between the NDPC and the FCC would support the effective delivery of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. As part of efforts to deepen collaboration, Dr Olatunji offered capacity-building support to the FCC, including training programmes and certification for staff as Data Protection Officers (DPOs), as well as access to the Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA).
