The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division of Lagos State, and the Royal Ambassador of the NDPC, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Dr Olatunji warmly welcomed the revered monarch and congratulated him on his recent appointment as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU). He commended Oba Ogunsanwo’s unwavering commitment to promoting data protection and privacy awareness, noting that traditional rulers play a critical role in sensitising communities and encouraging compliance with data protection principles at the grassroots level.
Building on the monarch’s new role as Chancellor of LASU, Dr Olatunji highlighted opportunities for strategic collaboration between the Commission and LASU. He introduced the Digital Privacy Awareness Campaign (DPAC) and proposed that LASU hosts a future edition, which could also serve as a platform for the establishment of a Data Privacy Club in the University to promote continuous engagement on privacy and data protection.
In his response, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Ogunsanwo, graciously welcomed the proposals and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the NDPC’s mandate. He advocated the establishment of a Data Protection and Privacy Centre at Lagos State University to serve as a hub for education, research, capacity building, innovation and public enlightenment on data protection and privacy, in line with global best practice.
The visit reflects the shared commitment of the NDPC, the Royal Institutions and the education sector to advancing data privacy awareness. This is expected to strengthen compliance with data protection laws, and fostering a privacy-conscious culture in Nigeria through a strategic collaboration with the traditional institutions.
